Intercity Buses: Most buses from other parts of Sicily (Catania, Siracusa, Trapani) arrive and depart from Piazza Cairoli, reached on foot via a walkway located in the main train station near the post office and the platform of Track 1. Pedestrians must enter the station to get to the walkway.

In the city: A ticket for the orange buses (operated by AMAT), available from tobacco vendors, some bars and some news agents (or the AMAT kiosk in Via Libertà next to Politeama), costs €1.30 (one euro thirty cents) and is valid for 90 (ninety) minutes. You must stamp the ticket in one of the machines near the entrances of the vehicle upon boarding the first bus you take using that ticket. (There is a fine of €52 for failure to comply.) A simple summary of a few local bus routes (by number):

• Monreale via Corso Calatafimi from Piazza Indipendenza and return – 389;
• Mondello taking Via Libertà from Politeama and return – 806;
• Main Train Station via Via Libertà with return along Via Roma – 101;
• Piazza Indipendenza to Porta Felice near the Sea along Via Vittorio Emanuele and return – Linea Verde (“L/V”) or Green Line;
• Piazza Indipendenza (Norman Palace) to Politeama area and English Garden – 104.

Sightseeing: City Sightseeing operates double-deck tour buses along two routes in the old part of the city and occasional departures for hilltop Monreale. A one-day ticket permits you to hop on or off the bus at any designated stop. Visit their website for details, rates and a brochure in PDF format. While this isn’t the same thing as having a qualifiedlicensed tour guide, it’s convenient if you’re touring on your own on foot.
Equally important is what kind of sightseeing to avoid. Taxis are expensive, so get the price from the driver before entering. The horse carriages are infamously expensive, so here too you should get the price for your itinerary before entering the carriage. The three-wheel vehicles driven – in many cases – by younger people are never recommended! If, despite our advice to the contrary, you decide to see Palermo this way, for your safety at least choose a vehicle driven by one of the older drivers (one who looks to be over 40).

Automobile Rental: Agencies are located on the airport’s lower level. Be warned that driving in Palermo’s chaos can be challenging.

Ships, Ferries, Hydrofoils: Tirrenia is the principal operator servicing Sicily, with daily departures to Lipari, Naples, Genoa, Tunis and Sardinia. Snav has faster ships and a fleet of hydrofoils (service is seasonal). Or try Siremar. For travel to Malta, check out Virtu Ferries.

Trains: The national railway, Trenitalia, provides service to Palermo from other cities.

The picturesque old village centre shows a magnificent display of architecture from different periods – medieval, Renaissance and Baroque. Its pretty narrow alleyways where local women still wear their traditional costumes draw many visitors. These wonderful facades, churches, fountains and imposing palaces decorated with balconies, portals, columns and archways come from the humble activity of sheep herding that brought riches to this small mountain village. Its craft shops offer traditional local handcraft products such as lace-pillow embroidery and fine filigree rings, pendants and necklaces. You can taste some of the most typical dishes in Scanno’s traditional restaurants.

At the foot of the village lies the Scanno Lake – a popular holiday destination among sports and relaxation lovers. Its azure waters and pleasant climate offer amazing opportunities for swimming, surfing, canoeing and all other sorts of water sports. Alternatively, you can choose to relax in the sun or take a bike and go cycling or hiking in the lake’s impressive surroundings in the midst of breathtaking mountains.

The lake had been created by a gigantic landslide from the Mountain Genzana that had blocked the Sagittario Valley. It is situated at 922 meters asl and its maximum depth reaches 36 meters. Due to the limestone bottom its water is very clear and the lake boasts blue flags for purity of water.

When you look at the lake from its shore the water is crystal clear and azure. It costs the pain to drive up the mountain to the picturesque Frattura town in order to see the lake in its full splendor. Its shape resembles of a heart and the water becomes dark grey. In the vicinity of lake there are situated beautiful ancient towns.

Fishing in the lake is reputed to be excellent although time constraints did not allow us to attest to this. The fish species present in the lake include the following:
– TROUT (trota)

– PERCH (persico reale)
– ROACH (rovella)
– RUDD (scardola)
– CARP (carpa)
– CATFISH (pesce gatto)
– EEL (capitone)
– WHITEFISH (lavarello)

Syracuse

Thanks to its enviable geographic position, Syracuse was a crucial crossroads of commercial exchange from when the Greeks settled it. Today it is a living artifact, connoting the customs and traditions of the many Mediterranean populations that passed through and dominated it, from the Byzantines, Bourbons, and Arabs to the Normans and Aragonese.

Sùraka, as Syracuse is known in Sicilian dialect (meaning an abundance of water) was one of the principal settlements in Magna Grecia, a place of artistic brilliance and commercial power. It was also one of the most important centers of Christianity during the Middle Ages, and it later saw its Baroque golden age after the earthquake of 1693.
The oldest urban nucleus, however, resides on the little island of Ortygia, where we find the Temple of Apollo, the most ancient in Sicily. The remains from the Temple of Athena (5th Century B.C.) were later converted into the Cathedral, while the Temple of Zeus rui culonne (two columns), due to the fact that what is left of the entire structure consists of just two columns.

In the course of the 4th Century B.C., Syracuse expanded via the residential quarters of Tyche and (the monumental) Neapolis (already existing were Ortygia, Acradina and Epipoli). Traces left by the Roman conquest include the beloved Amphitheatre, while just as magnificent is the Castello di Maniace, a Byzantine citadel commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia.

The Cave Necropolis of Pantalica

Not far from Syracuse, situated near open quarries is the cave necropolis of Pantalica; it is environmental wonder meets archaeological treasure. Pantalica became a settlement on the plateau of the Iblei Mountains for those coastal inhabitants fleeing the Sicels and other Italic populations that landed here in the first half of the 8th Century B.C. (the period to which these scenographic necropolises date).
The complex is made up of approximately 5,000 tombs dug into the rock, along with the Anaktoron (Prince’s Palace) positioned at the top of a hill, a reminder of the grandiose Mycenaean palaces.

The village assimilated the customs and traditions of the gamut of peoples that came here, and in the Medieval Age it became a refuge for peoples exhausted by enemy incursions. The scenic beauty of Pantalica can be seen in its natural oasis, where marvelous examples of flora (anemones, orchids, and oleanders) and animal species thrive (peregrine falcon, wolf and river crab).

This is the home of Archimedes, esteemed Greek mathematican and physicist in the 3rd Century B.C. Caravaggio arrived in Syracuse in 1608 after having escaped from prison in Malta. Here he painted The Burial of St. Lucy (the city’s Patron Saint). Along the banks of the River Ciane grows Cyperus Papyrus Linneo, one of the innumerable species of the world’s papyrus. Be sure to see the Papyrus Museum, inaugurated in 1989.

The villas embody an innovative form and function, a new type of princely residence that differed from both the farms owned by rich Florentines of the period and from the military might of baronial castles. The Medici villas form the first example of the connection between architecture, gardens, and the environment and became an enduring reference for princely residences throughout Italy and Europe.

Their gardens and integration into the natural environment helped develop the appreciation of landscape characteristic Humanism and the Renaissance.

The Uffizi is tremendously popular and rightly so. As one of the most impressive collections of fine Renaissance art in the world, the Uffizi is one of the busiest attractions in Florence, Italy. In the Uffizi Gallery, visitors can see first-hand the mastery of Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and many other Italian masters.

2. Feast on Florentine steak

If you fancy eating something that is typical of Florence then you should definitely opt for a Florentine steak (Bistecca alla Fiorentina).
There are restaurants where it cost €5.50 for 100grams with a minimum order of 500grams – so it’s worth bringing a hungry friend! The beef from local Tuscan cows is served on the bone and cooked over woodchips to give a delicious smoky flavour. Enjoy with a delightful glass of Italian red.

3. Climb the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore

The Duomo’s (church’s) dome was designed by Brunelleschi and is one of the most visited pieces of Italian architecture. Brunelleschi was awarded the job of designing the dome after a competition held in 1419 by the Arte della Lana. With the help of Donatello, Brunellschi was awarded the task. It also features the stunning Giotto‘s Tower.

4. Sample the gelato

Gelato from a traditional gelateria in Florence. Italy Gelato – Italian ice cream – comes in a variety of interesting flavours from mojito to cherry and even coffee. The flavours are refined and the texture smooth due to its low air content. Go to lesser known local gelateria to avoid high tourist prices. You pay around €5-6 for three scoops.

5. The National Museum of the Bargello

The Bargello is located near the Piazza della Signoria and houses some of the most incredible sculptures from the leading artists of the Renaissance era. Such noted works from Michelangelo, Donatello, Ammannati, Bandinelli and others grace the interior of this great museum.

6. The Accademia

Home to Michelangelo’s David, the Accademia is a popular tourist spot and can get quite busy. Leave your camera at the hotel, because no pictures are allowed inside. Call ahead for a reservation and save yourself an hour wait in line for one of the most amazing Italy tours.

7. Pitti Palace

On the southern bank of the Arno, Pitti Palace houses the art collection of the former Medici family. Also, the included Boboli Gardens make an idealistic and beautiful walk behind the palazzo.

8. Walk across the Ponte Vecchio

Built in 1345, the Ponte Vecchio is the oldest bridge in Florence and one of the most popular tourist spots in the city. Interestingly, it’s one of the last serving bridges in Europe and still has shops and buildings along it. The bridge is a great spot for photographs and is two minutes from the Uffizi. Running along the top of it is the Vasari Corridor built by the Medici family so they could travel safely between Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti.
The only bridge to survive World War II and the oldest bridge in Florence, the Ponte Vecchio is a sightseer’s and shopper’s delight as there is a number of fine jewelry stores located nearby the “old bridge.”

9. Santa Croce Basilica

Come and pay homage at the monumental tombs of some of the most noted and respected artists of Italy including Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Dante.

10. San Lorenzo Basilica

No less than nine Michelangelo sculptures can be seen in the sacristy of this agrarian church. With a facade that was never fully completed, the church has a deceiving quality if viewed from the outside. But once inside, enjoy the Renaissance in all its glory.

11. Santa Maria del Carmine church

The Santa Maria del Carmine is most famous for its collection of inspired frescoes by such artists as Masaccio and Masolino da Panicale. It’s also home to the Brancacci Chapel and the Corsini Chapel.

12. Ponte Santa Trinita

This bridge, near the church Santa Trinita, is the oldest elliptic arch bridge in the world and was designed and constructed by famed Florentine, Bartolomeo Ammanati. The original bridge was destroyed by German troops in August of 1944, but was later rebuilt in 1958 with most of the stones coming from the original construction.

13. Watch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo is a famous square dedicated to the renaissance artist Michelangelo. You’ll find an impressive statue of him in the middle of the square and you’ll also be treated to unbelievable views of the city. Go just before sunset to be blown away by beautiful panoramas as the sun goes down.

14. Experience Fiesole

If you want to get out of the city for a few hours then Fiesole is roughly 20 minutes by bus from the centre of Florence. On a clear day the views of Florence are impressive and the area is host to some historic archaeological ruins dating back to the 8th and 9th century.
